The Karni Mata Temple is famous for its approximately 20,000 rats. These holy rats are called kabas, and people travel great distances to pay their respects. Shoes have to be removed at the gate, leaving you walk barefoot among the rat droppings. It’s considered fortunate for a rat to run over your feet. Pilgrims bring food offerings inside the main shrine for the rats, and it’s considered a high honor to eat the food that has been nibbled on by the rats.
