The overnight bus ride from Olinda to Salvador was 14 hours, the longest of the trip. Our hostel was located in the city’s historical center, the Pelourinho. Salvador is the capital of Bahia, which has a strong African heritage. I enjoyed tasting Bahian cuisine, including acarajé and moqueca. Other highlights were an African Brazilian culture show and Blessed Tuesday, where a party begins after the 6pm mass at the church of São Francisco. Drummers march through the streets, followed by a procession of dancers. In addition to sightseeing in Salvador, we made a day trip to the nearby island of Itaparica.
