Ciudad Mitad del Mundo

On the way to Quito I stopped at Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, a tract of land that contains the Monument to the Equator. The monument is suppose to mark the location of the Equator, from which the country of Ecuador takes its name. Apparently the French expedition that placed the Equatorial line in 1736 was off by 240 meters, and the inaccuracy wasn’t realized until after the advent of GPS. For me, the irony of the monument being misplaced only makes the experience more memorable.
