Nepal - Kathmandu - Swayambhu Monkeys

Swayambhu

After my early morning arrival in Kathmandu, I dropped off my backpack at my Thamel guesthouse and walked a couple of miles in the dark to Swayambhu. The tourist nickname of Swayambhu is “The Monkey Temple” because it’s overrun with monkeys. A long stairway with 365 steps leads to the hilltop complex consisting of a stupa, shrines, and temples. After watching the sun rise over Kathmandu, I soaked in the atmosphere of scrambling monkeys, exercisers, and Buddhists turning the prayer wheels.
