India - Ellora Caves - Kailasa Temple Entrance

Ellora Caves

Ellora is known for Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain cave temples cut into the rock of the Charanandri hills. The 34 caves were constructed between the 5th and 9th centuries. The Kailasa Temple is the unrivaled centerpiece of Ellora. Carved out of solid rock from the top down, the Kailasa Temple covers twice the area of the Parthenon in Athens and is 1.5 times as high.
